VPN (virtual private network) is a service hosted by Bishops and used to connect to the BU Network OFF-campus. This is typically only necessary when a user needs to access network drives, remote terminal servers, or remote desktop from OFF-campus.

1. How to request VPN access:
In order to get VPN access, your manager must first place a ‘VPN Setup/Config’ Service Request through the Octopus system. To place an Octopus request, please, visit: octopus.ubishops.ca
Log in with your Bishop’s credentials.
If login fails, you may have entered the wrong password or your account does not have VPN access.
To request VPN access, refer to the “How to request VPN access” section.
Select Download for Windows.
Select Save File.
3. How to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client:
Open the downloaded file.
Select OK if prompted to open Executable file.
Select RUN if prompted to run this file.
Follow the installer’s instruction.
It should be fine to keep clicking “Next” to get through the install process…
Select “I accept …” and Click NEXT.
If prompted, select ‘Allow this program to make change …’
Once the installation completes, select FINISH
Your Cisco AnyConnect VPN is now installed on your computer.
4. How to use the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client:
To open the VPN program Select the Windows’ START icon
Select the ‘Cisco’ folders
Open the ‘Cisco AnyConnect…’ program
You should see a window appear which will ask for a server name. It may already be filled in, otherwise enter “vpn.ubishops.ca” and click “Connect”. You should not have to renter this address again the next time you use the VPN, instead, it may already say “vpn” (this is OK).
Enter your BU username and password when prompted to log on. If entered correctly you should see a “Connected” message appear, and the Cisco AnyConnect icon in the System tray change to look like it is “locked”.
This means you are connected to the VPN and can access the network as if you were on campus.
Cisco AnyConnect VPN is now connected.
5. How to mount the network drives:
A few moments after the VPN connection is established you will be prompted to enter your Bishop’s credentials.
Once entered correctly, the network drives will be automatically mounted on your computer.
6. How to access the network drives
To access the mounted drives you have to first navigate to the file explorer on Windows. To do this navigate to the desktop and click on the folder icon. Another way to do this is to search for “file explorer” on the search bar on the Windows.
Once in the file explorer to see your mounted drives click on “This PC.”
In “This PC” you can see the mounted network drives, and these should be all your work drives that are normally found on campus.
