Don't Be a Guest, Be Yourself!

When you’re rushing to join your online class on Microsoft Teams, it’s so easy to just click the link and you’re in! But have you ever noticed that you have to wait until your Professor admits you? Do you have the word “guest” next to your name? Are you not able to be part of or see all the features like everyone else can? Don’t worry, you can fix that! The steps below will show you how to ensure you always join your Teams meetings as yourself.

Before you click on the recurring meeting link for your class, it is important that you are logged in to Teams¬†with your BU credentials so you do not appear as a guest. How to tell if you’re a guest is by clicking on the profile circle in the upper right corner. “Guest” will appear next to the name you had to write yourself before joining..

If you have the Teams App installed:

  1. Open the app on your Laptop, Desktop or Mobile device.

2. Log in using your BU email address, followed by your BU password and make sure you have access to the device you chose to receive the MFA code.

3. Once you are logged in, head back to the meeting link, click on it, and a window will pop up asking how to want to open the meeting to which you will choose the application. You may also take the time to check off the option to remember your choice.

**While is it recommended to have the app installed, sometimes you just haven’t gotten around to that, yet. Click here for instructions on how to do so**

If you are choosing to use the browser anyway, then please take the time to read the warnings below if they apply to you.

On any browser (including supported browsers like Chrome and Edge), please be aware of the limitations such as: New Meeting Experience which allows you to have blurred background, gallery view, and separate windows for Teams calls and the main Teams app.

If you open the Teams web app on an unsupported browser (Safari, Firefox, IE, Opera, Brave, etc.), you will run into one or more of the following issues:

  • Audio is available through a telephone line only . User can’t use their microphone.
  • User can’t share their camera or see other participants’ videos but can view presented content through image-based screen sharing.
  • User can’t share their screen, although they can see a screen that another meeting participant shares.
  • User can’t take control during a screen sharing session.
  • User won’t receive incoming call notifications.
  • If the call is interrupted, the meeting won’t automatically reconnect.
  • User can’t start meetings.
