This page will guide you through setting up your new BU iPhone or iPad device and help you understand some of its most useful features.
When asked to “Choose a Wi-Fi Network”, select WIZABU* and enter your BU login credentials.
A certificate window will pop-up, select ‘Trust’ to continue.
Once the connection is established, click ‘Next’ in the top right corner.
Once the device setup has been completed, you can setup a different Wi-Fi connection by selecting the “Settings” application and clicking on the ‘Wi-Fi’ tab in the upper left section.
A BU managed device means that the University can help the device user reset a forgotten passcode or provide support in case of a lost/stolen device to avoid the loss of any confidential information. Make sure to check out the ‘Lost Device’ section to learn more about the procedure to follow in case of a lost device.
The University can also pre-load important and useful applications on any of its managed devices to provide its user with useful tools to facilitate BU related tasks. To learn more about pre-loaded applications refer to the ‘Useful applications’ section.
While the device is managed by the University, the owner of the device remains its user and the University cannot, in any case, access any of the user’s private information.
As the owner of the device, you can connect your Apple ID to the device and recover backups and other apps purchased from your Apple ID.
While setting up your device, you will be asked to create a passcode. The device passcode will be required to unlock the device and to allow major change (ex: resetting the device’s settings). It is, therefore, important to setup a strong passcode that you feel comfortable entering often.
Your passcode may be setup with numbers only or a mix of letters & numbers or with words only. You can be creative with your passcode but make sure you feel comfortable entering the desired passcode often.
If you prefer using an alpha numeric passcode, the keyboard used to type in the passcode will be changed, after the initial setup, to only display numbers to make the login process more comfortable.
What makes a passcode STRONG?
- It is UNIQUEA strong passcode should be unique to the device and kept private.
- It contains at least 6 charactersTry avoiding weak passcode such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or password.
- It does not contain any parts of your name or BU username
Because your device is managed by the University, it will be pre-loaded with a few useful applications. You can find these applications on your home screen after the initial setup.
NOTE: some of the pre-loaded applications might be downloaded to your device and added to your home screen shortly after the initial setup, it is possible that the application require a few moments before you can see them on your home screen. It might seem as though they just appeared on your device once the setup has been completed.
The ‘Octopus Request’ bookmark will open the login page for the ITS Octopus website. On it, you will be able to request support for any IT related issue you might encounter while working on the Bishop’s campus.
The ‘myBU’ bookmark will bring you to the login page of the myBU website allowing you to quickly access your BU account and services.
Self Service Application
The ‘Self Service’ application will allow you to download, free of charge and without using an Apple ID, a multitude of useful applications.
The applications offered in the Self Service app have been selected by the University to help our client find the most relevant and best software to be used on campus or by its employees. In the ‘Self Service’ application, you will find applications to connect to BlueJeans, Cisco AnyConnect, as well as Mirroring Assist. You can also have access to your Nethris payroll as well as Office suite and editing programs. There are many applications available to you in the ‘Self Service’ application, have a look and pick and choose the ones that suits your needs.
The ‘SAFEGaiter’ application will allow you to access the University’s safety application which will notify you about any security concerns currently impacting the campus (ex: flood warnings or power outage).
QR Code Scanning
You will see around campus, on posters, digital signage, and even on websites, QR codes that can be scanned to access more information.
With your device, you can quickly scan any QR code you encounter on the Bishop’s campus. Simply pickup your device, open the camera application, and aim it at any QR code.

A link will pop-up on your screen, once the QR code is detected by your camera. Click it to be redirected to the website.
You can setup your Bishop’s email on your new device to receive and send your emails directly from your device.
To setup your email on your device select the Mail application
Enter your Bishop’s password when a window pops up asking you to “Enter the password for the Exchange account ‘Bishops'” and click OK.
Your emails will start to download shortly.
Setting up iMessage properly will allow you to receive messages from your contacts and prevent duplication of message conversations.
Open “Settings” and select “Messages”
Select “Send & Receive”
You should, typically have 2 addresses set for your iMessages, your phone number (if you own an Apple phone) and your Apple ID email.
If you only own an iPad you will not see 2 addresses, this is normal.
Unless you prefer to setup your iMessages differently, we suggest that you set it up this way:
Both email address and phone number checked to send iMessages to and reply from,
Start new conversation from your phone number.
Note: If you own more than one Apple device, we strongly suggest that you replicate these settings on all devices.
In the event of a lost or stolen device, it is important that you contact ITS as soon as possible.
Reacting quickly will ensure better odds for the recovery of the device or, if needed, remotely wiping the device of all sensitive information it may contain.

Once a device has been officially reported as lost/stolen, the device will be locked and a message will be displayed on the screen indicating that the device should be returned to the IT Helpdesk. The device will remain locked until it is brought back to the IT Helpdesk and it is unlocked by an IT member. The device will emit a beeping sound until the lost status is removed or the device is powered down.
Once a device has been officially reported as lost/stolen the location features will become available to the ITS manager to ensure the best odds at recovering the device.
NOTE: The location feature will only be made available after a device has been officially reported as lost/stolen. In its normal state, your device location stays completely private. The University cannot, in any case, access any of the user’s private information.
